![]() ![]() Then wait until you’re on the other side of your parent star in your orbit and measure the same star’s position and how much it has shifted. Measure the position of a star with respect to other background stars on one evening. So here’s how we use that information in astronomy to find the distances to certain stars (those close enough for our instruments to measure any parallax at all). That is to say, if we know the baseline of the triangle and we know the angle opposite the baseline, then we know that the adjacent side must have a specific ratio to the baseline which will tell us its exact value. If we have a right angled triangle, then the ratio between the opposite side and the adjacent side of an angle is a function of that angle, which we call the tangent. ![]() From this fact we find how similar shapes are defined, because the ratios of their sides are always exactly the same for both shapes no matter what different sizes they are, as long as they have the same number of sides and values for angles). It’s used today in respect to the distances of stars from the solar system, using the Earth’s orbit and the apparent shift in the star’s positions throughout the year.īasic trigonometry states that the ratios of the sides of triangles are a function of the angles of the triangle (in fact, this is true of all shapes, and can be called one of the most basic laws of shapes – as it pretty much defines what “shape” means. It is simply a RATIO that relates apparent motion to distance using trigonometry. ![]() Something should stand out to anyone who isn’t geometrically illiterate or desperately trying to save the integrity of their favourite film franchise – that the distance is dependent on the amount you or the object moves, and hence is not really a standard unit of distance (or rather, wouldn’t be used as one by a space-faring civilization or galactic empire). It’s basically a measure of parallax and how it relates to distance. In short, it is the distance an object is from you when it appears to shift its position by 1 arc second over half an arbitrary distance you or the object travel. The word is an abbreviation, which comes from “parallax arc second”. So, let’s first explain what a parsec ACTUALLY is. Yet again, this may sound good to lay people with no real knowledge of astronomy or astrophysics, but to anyone who ACTUALLY knows what a parsec is, this is just as idiotic as the idea that a parsec is a unit of time, and the fan boys who use it only prove that they have no idea what a parsec even is. Therefore, the Millenium Falcon was fast enough to fight against the gravity in this region in order to allow it to take a shorter route that was less than 12 parsecs (or about 39 light years) long. #Define parsec unit full#Unable to accept a major cock-up in the script of their favourite film, the fan boys went into full mental gymnastic overdrive, trying to come up with why this line could still make sense – talking about a region of black holes that you had to pass through, and that only a fast ship could go a shorter route through this region of space. ( A Parsec is an obscure unit of distance in Astrophysics, equal to 3.26 Light Years. Well, it wasn’t long before people explained that it isn’t a unit of time but a measure of distance, and even Neil DeGrasse Tyson weighed in. Now, it is absolutely obvious that originally George Lucas heard the word “Parsec”, and thought that because it involves the word “sec” (which he correctly thought was short for “second”) then this is a spacey/sciencey sounding unit of time that would be appropriate to drop into a sci-fi film. OK, it’s time to bury this nonsense once and for all.Įver since Star Wars: A New Hope originally came out, there has been a minor scandal surrounding the scene where Han Solo declares that he did the Kessel Run in the Millennium Falcon in “less than 12 parsecs”. Expect heated comments from angry fans who lack the ability to understand reality, or have a sense of humour, below □ Trigger warning: This article explains basic geometry and science, with the unfortunate downside of demonstrating that Star Wars is wrong about something, and that the fan boys don’t know what they’re on about. ![]()

![]() ![]() Shadow Tactics is a fine RTS and gives you the reigns for victory from the get go, it’s just a shame some of the levels are far too long and a little overwhelming. It’s just a shame the length of the levels stop you from getting there for some time. There are serene forests and thrashing rivers you’ll get to play through and no two levels are the same. Some of the towns are colourfully lit in the dark, and others covered in snow. Obviously, high buildings are helpful to Takuma the sniper, and bushes are good for the speedy ninja or street scavenger, Yuki.Įach environment is different and beautifully drawn and designed. You can walk over rooftops, swim underwater, and hide in houses and bushes, using them all to your advantage. Action can get heated thanks to the fabulous AI, but there are plenty of opportunities to progress, not just through your weapons and skills, but the environments as well. Sometimes, you’ll see multiple options to advance and Shadow Mode helps you to build a selection of decisions, then execute by pressing one button. It harks back to the golden age when games didn’t hold your hand, but at the same time you wonder how we ever coped without the auto save function. With no auto save, I got caught out on a few occasions and had to replay the last ten or fifteen minutes of a mission. One great feature of Shadow Tactics is the ability to quick save whenever you want, and not only that, a small counter appears on the screen telling you how long ago you saved, reminding you it’s probably time you did. On one hand, you feel a real sense of achievement when you’ve sneaked past a hundred guards without detection, and on the other you’re so worn out that a rest in-between them is rather necessary. ![]() It takes hours to finish a single mission, which is both a blessing and a curse. I can’t tell you the amount of times I took their intelligence for granted, thinking I could sneak past without triggering their attention, only for them to attack or call for back-up. You can crouch-walk past them and if there’s a big cart or rock between you and them, it’ll stop them from seeing you. Each guard you come across has a view cone, and if you step inside it they’ll come rushing. The enemies are very smart and assertive which makes for a rough ride. Some moves are only altered slightly between characters, such as the ability to throw stones or sake bottles for distraction, but overall each person has a unique skillset that’ll help you through a range of tough encounters. You start playing as Hayato, a ninja with the ability to climb onto rooftops, throw shurikens at guards and stab enemies with your ninjato. In the first mission, you’re shown a handful of skills to help you either fight or sneak to your MO. The story takes place in the Edo period of Japan, where you take control of five characters (not all available from the start) who have been hired by a new Shogun to instil nationwide peace and fight against the criminals and conspirators holding Japan from moving forward. Shadow Tactics doesn’t take forever and a day to get to grips with – in fact, you’re pretty much given the knowledge you need thanks to a great tutorial mission that introduces you to the game’s mechanics in bitesize chunks. We’ve already had XCOM 2, Total War: Warhammer and The Banner Saga 2 among others this year, so surely we’re done with real-time strategy games in 2016? Well, if Shadow Tactics is the last RTS of the year, it tops off a fantastic 12 months for the genre. There are some pretty steep learning curves in RTS games, and grasping the complexities of commands can take hours until any of it sinks in. ![]() ![]() This game is really a game that will “shine” when you get together a group of players who are really comfortable with their sexuality. Ours took about a half an hour from start to finish with 4 players. The game can definitely be fun, and it doesn’t take too long to play – it depends on how long every takes to answer and guess. The dice actually has numbers printed on it instead of the traditional dots, and the game pieces themselves come in six different colors and are just large plastic pieces of a standing human. There are about 30 pieces of paper, but any average sheet of paper could double as the sheet with this game. The pad of paper has 28 spaces on it, so you might need to move on to new paper if the game goes a long time. The board itself is cute and folds up nicely to go back into storage, and the pencils are those small, no-eraser pencils. The other materials in the board game are pretty average. “If there were a Sexual Olympics, in what event would you win the gold?” The board “Where do you think your parents were when they conceived you?” “What is the best sex advice you can give your child?” ![]() “Where, besides a bed, is a great place to have a pillow?” “Who at the table most recently had sex?” “What girl should every girl model their life after?” “What is always a fun activity at a party?” The picture on the board space where you land will direct you to which question you are supposed to read.Įxample questions, like I usually include: Each card (of which there are about fourty or so) has three different questions on it – one of each one of the types. There’s teh general sex and adult lifestyle questions, questions that are a bit more personal and a bit more risque, and questions that could only be answered in your little black book. There are three different types of questions. Yes, there are different types of “questions” which vary from not-so-risque to “only-in-your-black-book”, so you really get a large variance of available questions depending on where you land and which card you pick up. The first person to reach the end of the board game is the winner, so being able to guess the answers is really what can “make” or “break” this game. The roller then advances one space for every correct match that they guessed. The player then tries to guess who answered what. All of the answers are then given to the person who just took a turn (not the player) and read aloud. All of the other players then write down their answers on their piece of paper. The player then picks up a card and reads the type of question specified. The player rolls the dice and moves the amount of spaces shown. Each person also receives a pad of paper to write on as well as a pencil. In fact, the instruction “book” is actually just a single piece of cardboard that explains things very simply and very quickly.Įveryone takes a token and starts on the “start” space. ![]() So how do you play? It’s honestly extremely simple, and you’ll easily be playing the game within five minutes of taking it out of the box. ![]() You could certainly play this at a swinger’s party, but don’t expect to become aroused by the game it’s really meant more just for fun. You could play with just 3 players, but it’d be really easy, and if you play with two players, there really isn’t much of a “game”, but you certainly could just take turns answering the questions. With more answers, it’ll be harder to guess and a lot more fun. You’d have to find game pieces and pencils for those newer players, but it can really “up the ante” as the entire point of the game is to guess who gave what answer. While the game only includes 6 game pieces, if you have more players, it definitely is a lot more fun. As some of the questions deal with adult situations, it’s not really recommended for those who are younger than the age of consent. The board game itself is intended for 4-6 players who are all 18 and older. It wouldn’t be anything that’s all that embarrassing. ![]() The box also includes the title of the game all over it, so it isn’t really “discreet”, but at the same time, it obviously looks like a party game made for adults, so no one is going to think that it’s a sex game or something like that. The box itself should easily hold up to items being stacked on top of it. The board game comes in a really sturdy cardboard box. The game is basically a large game of different questions, and it can be played with lovers, friends, or just any people who are comfortable with adult conversations. The game comes with the game board, question cards, the answer pad, one dice, penciles, and the game pieces. The Loaded Questions adult game is a board game (made for parties) that is sold by TabuToys. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() LAHTF understands that the project to renovate and convert the Tower Theatre to a non-theatrical use will generate mixed reactions.
